Lyrics - Edges
I Once Loved A Lass
Traditional / AKC Version

I once loved a lass, I loved her full well
I hated all others who spoke of her ill
And now she's rewarded me well for my love
For she's gone to be wed to another

When I saw my love to the church go
With bridesmen and bridesmaids they made a fine show
And I followed on with my heart full of woe
For she's gone to be wed to another

The men in yon forest, ask it of me
How many strawberries grow in the salt-sea?
And I answer them back with a tear in my eye
How many ships sail in the forest?

Go dig me a grave that’s long, wide and deep
And cover it over with flowers so sweet
That I may lay down there and take a long sleep
And maybe in time, I’ll forget her.

I once loved a lass, I loved her full well
I hated all others who spoke of her ill
And now she's rewarded me well for my love
For she's gone to be wed to another
For she's gone to be wed to another
For she's gone to be wed to another

Take Another Chance On Me
Copyright 2012, by Alan Kim Cochran

Take another, take another, take another chance on me
Take another, take another… what did you expect to see?

Canted angles take the concrete jungle
The dark shadow of Death stands upon every corner
Beckoning with a crooked finger…
For me…  always for me

Take another, take another, take another chance on me
Take another, take another… what did you expect to see?

A sultry woman stares from under a feathered hat
Cigarette smoke coiling upward
Detective pulls a revolver from a trench coat
Call me “Johnnie”, if you think it will help.

Take another, take another, take another chance on me
Take another, take another… what did you expect to see?

Sinister villains - ominous silhouettes
You can run, but you can’t hide
Find asylum… but who can I trust?
Like a life of film noir

Take another, take another, take another chance on me
Take another, take another… what did you expect to see?

Yeah, and they follow me, always… follow
And who is the third man… the one who sees it all?
Across the cocktail lounge, his glass empty
Yet he never turns, he never turns

Take another, take another, take another chance on me
Take another, take another… what did you expect to see?

Life, for me, is a film noir
Haunting siren calls, and distant wails
Empty streets, stolen kisses
Slaps and tangled webs… but, but, but…

Take another, take another, take another chance on me
Take another, take another… what did you expect to see?
Take another, take another, take another chance on me
Take another, take another… what did you expect to see?

A lonely guy, in a lonely town
from across the shattered pave
places of smoke and shadow…
Lurid fire… innuendo

I guess we’re all movie stars after all…

Lady Blue
Copyright 2012, by Alan Kim Cochran

Well, I heard you were down, so down, again
And I heard you were left, so sad, by a friend
So I’ll sing you a song, sing you a song, Lady Blue
It’s the least I can do, for you, Lady Blue

Ah,     ah,     ah
It’s the least I can do, for you, Lady Blue

And I know what has gone, know what has gone, before
And I know you can be, know you can be, much more
And you know that I care, know that I care, Lady Blue
So I’ll sing you a song, once again, Lady Blue

Ah,     ah,     ah
It’s the least I can do, for you, Lady Blue
It’s the least I can do, least I can do, Lady Blue

Who Are You?
Copyright 2012, by Alan Kim Cochran

I don’t know…
I don’t know…
I don’t know…

Who are… who are you, to say that you understand?
Who are… who are you, to think I should feel so grand?
When you don’t even know the back of your hand?

I don’t know…
I don’t know…

Who are… who are you, to say that you understand?
Who are… who are you, to think I should feel so grand?
When you can’t even tell the sea from the sand?

I don’t know…
I don’t know…

Who are… who are you, to say that you understand?
Tell me how that can be when you’ve never known me,
As I walk down the quay…  A smile as I go…  Fair!  Cheerioooo…

…ohhhhh!    Ahhhhhhhhhh      La la la lahhhhhhhh
Whooo whoo whoo whoo whoo    Whooo whoo whoo whoo whoo
Whooo whoo whoo whoo whoo    Whooo whoo whoo whoo whoo
Whooo whoo whoo whoo whoo    Whooo whoo whoo whoo whoo…

I roam the dreary coast of the isle
Knowing, as I do, that it was to be
And often wander for mile after mile
So then, why can’t you leave me wild and free?

You wanna’ own me - I think you’d sell me out
And why can’t you see?   ‘Not what I’m all about?
You’re not my lover; Not my mother
If there’s another     reason tell me now

I don’t know…
I don’t know…
I don’t know…

DON’T TOUCH ME – Dance Version
Copyright 2012, by Alan Kim Cochran

“He wouldn’t leave me alone…”

You’ll see me in the street
In a magazine
Admire me where I stand
But don’t touch me

Don’t touch me
Leave me to be free
Don’t touch me
Don’t touch me
That’s as I want to be

You’ll see me on the screen
In a movie show
Admire me where I stand
But don’t touch me

Don’t touch me
Leave me to be free
Don’t touch me
Don’t touch me
That’s as I want to be

You’ll see me on the screen
In a movie show
Admire me where I stand
But don’t touch me

Don’t touch me
Leave me to be free
Don’t touch me
Don’t touch me
That’s as I want to be

And you know my face
I’m the girl next door
Admire me where I stand
But don’t touch me

Don’t touch me
Leave me to be free
Don’t touch me
Don’t touch me
That’s as I want to be

“But I’ll never be your girl”

Whether We Live Or Die
Copyright 2011, by Alan Kim Cochran

I thought I saw you once… I could swear I did

Whether we live or die
Knowing the reason why
Whether we die or live
Knowing what we can give

I thought I saw you once, I could swear I did…
Walking through willows trees… of verdant lace and umber
I think you knew I was… that I was, a friend
Walking through willows trees… canvas by Monet

Whether we live or die
Knowing the reason why
Whether we die or live
Knowing what we can give

I thought I saw you once, I could swear I did…
Dripping irony, every stroke, lovely as the rain
I think you knew I was… that I was, a friend
Walking through willows trees… canvas by Monet

I thought I saw you once, I could swear I did…
Down by the willow stream… a girl of silk and amber
I think you knew I was… that I was, a friend
Walking through willows trees… canvas by Monet

Whether we live or die
Knowing the reason why
Whether we die or live
Knowing what we can give

I thought I saw you once… I could swear I did

Shar

Show me that you care
That you would, if you could
Tell me that you care
Hold my heart, to your heart

Shar, Shar, Shar, Shar
Shar, Shar, Shar, Shar

But I saw you holding out and… holding it back
And waiting for something real, something sure… to hold on to
Wanting to give, but always afraid, always betrayed
Fearing the day, fearing the nights… alone

Show me that you care
That you would, if you could
Tell me that you care
Hold my heart, to your heart

Shar, Shar, Shar, Shar
Shar, Shar, Shar, Shar

Pick up the pieces once again… once again
Roses love ashes and trees grow from… the tiniest seeds
And in believing, we can be… always can be
Holding our hearts, to our hearts… for now and forever

Show me that you care
That you would, if you could
Tell me that you care
Hold my heart, to your heart

Show me that you care
That you would, if you could
Tell me that you care
Hold my heart, to your heart

Shar, Shar, Shar, Shar
Shar, Shar, Shar, Shar

Shar, Shar, Shar, Shar
Shar, Shar, Shar, Shar

Show me that you care
That you would, if you could
Tell me that you care
Hold my heart, to your heart

Such A Lonely Girl
Copyright 2012, by Alan Kim Cochran

Girl…
I hear you are alone again, alone again
Like you were, when I met you
And no one would be faithful to you, loyal to you
Like I would, when I met you

Sad when you find you’re always alone
Sad when there’s no one taking you home
Sad when have to be such a lonely girl

Sad when you find you’re always alone
Sad when there’s no one taking you home
Sad when have to be such a lonely girl

Girl…
And I would have taken you, married you
If I could, when I met you
And I would have been faithful to you, loyal to you
If I could, when I met you

Sad when you find you’re always alone
Sad when there’s no one taking you home
Sad when have to be such a lonely girl

Candace Whitney…
Candace Whitney…
Such a soft voice…
Flaxen hair…
Eyes of blue…
A Gentle heart…
That willow glide!
Lady of lace

But it’s plain to see
You don’t care for me
Yeah, and I can tell
You don’t love me well
Yes it’s plain to see
You don’t care for me

Candace Whitney…
No, no, no…
Do…  Do… Do…

But it’s plain to see
You don’t care for me
Yeah, and I can tell
That you don’t love me well
Yes it’s plain to see
You don’t care for me, no, no, no, no, no…

The Silence of Thy Dreams
Copyright 2012, by Alan Kim Cochran

“Shake loose thy spirit’s wings, muse upon thy mother’s kiss, and turn thee toward the vision of the highest good that hath ever swept on silver wings across the silence of thy dreams.”
- Ayesha, from H. Rider Haggard’s “She” (…who must be obeyed).

Come with me, to join the flame
And call me by my chosen name
Kalikrates, to your Ayesha
Somewhere, lost, in far Tunisia

Far across the desert sands
Parting lips, and reaching hands
Call to me of love rejoined
Of ancient hearts, so foul purloined

Enter now, the sacred fire
Dancing with our heart’s desire
Come within, eternal youth
And ever trust upon my sooth

Ever, and ever, and ever… again

Shake thee loose thy spirit’s wings
Across the silence of thy dreams
Muse upon thy mother’s kiss
And enter to eternal bliss

Enter now, the sacred fire
Dancing with our heart’s desire
Come within, eternal youth
And ever trust upon my sooth

Ever, and ever, and ever… again

Far across the desert sands
Parting lips, and reaching hands
Call to me of love rejoined
Of ancient hearts, so foul purloined

So call me by my chosen name
And come with me, to join the flame
Ayesha gone, the taste of dust
But I must live, as live I must…
…without her, without her…
Forever, and ever… again

Sundered Hearts
Copyright 2012, by Alan Kim Cochran

Sundered hearts; their lies were never meant to be
Keening winds, that rattle through the ravaged trees
Take my hand, to wander in the endless light
We, together – time for careless, free, respite

‘Soft the dawn, that falls upon our wing’ed fear
Clear to see, the frail love that we hold dear
Given time, we’d see an end to foolish things
‘Loose the chain, withhold, until the daylight sings

To fear, to seek, to yearn to hold you near
To fear, to seek, to yearn

Splendid smiles, and dappled colors – gone the gray
That preys upon our angst and holds our will at bay
Run to meet the new life, beautiful and strange
Breathe the real way, and revel in the change

I can see the pain that fades within your eyes
Failing memories, far cast upon the skies
And the tears that once made tracks upon your face
Water leaves of meaning, ‘come to take their place

To fear, to seek, to yearn to hold you near
To fear, to seek, to yearn
To fear, to seek, to yearn to hold you near
To fear, to seek, to yearn

Sundered hearts; their lies were never meant to be
Keening winds, that rattle through the ravaged trees
Given time, we’d see an end to foolish things
‘Loose the chain, withhold, until the daylight sings

To fear, to seek, to yearn to hold you near
To fear, to seek, to yearn
To fear, to seek, to yearn to hold you near
To fear, to seek, to yearn

Green Snake Woman
Copyright 2012, by Alan Kim Cochran

Chorus:
I want the green snake woman with the strawberry hair
She’s the green snake woman for me
I want the green snake woman with the strawberry hair
She’s the green snake woman for me
My friends all gag, but I don’t care
She’s as cute as can be
I want the green snake woman with the strawberry hair
She’s the green snake woman for me
And they say that she’s not natural, but
She’s the woman for me

Yeah… so I rang up my Alchemist
(‘keep him on retainer… for just such occasions)
Doc, ya gotta help me!
What seems to be the problem?
Well…

Chorus

Ah, yes… the green snake woman
How can I win her, Doc?
It’ll cost ya’
I don’t care, Doc.  I gotta have her
I understand…  Well, you’ll need to make a decoction
Right…  and what kind of a concoction is a decoction, Doc?
‘Same thing
I see.   Alright… a decoction then
Well, first you find something suitable to mix it in…
For a snake woman, that would be the skull of monitor lizard
Yeah…  I can do that
Ya see, Doc…

I want the green snake woman with the strawberry hair
She’s the green sna…

Don’t interrupt me!
Oh… sorry, Doc.  It’s just…
I understand completely
Fill the skull with mead, made from a thousand different honeys
From a thousand different beehives….  It must be…  a thousand, you understand?
Yeah…  I can do that
Stir in the juice of sixteen pomegranates, but only drop by drop
And then eat the pulp, while reciting Shakespeare’s soliloquies
Yeah…  I can do that
Grate in… the fang of a saber-toothed tiger…
Stirring vigorously, until it foams, in purple
Yeah…  I can do that
Add the flesh of a triple-seeded loquat, and bury the pit
Dancing a gig around it, by the light of a full moon
For thirty-three…   and one-third…      times
Yeah…  I can do that
Boil the mix, within the skull, over flaming sulfur
Until it’s dark and thick, and then let it cool
Strain it all through a spider’s web, just as the dawn ascends
And drink it, while standing upon one leg… and one leg only.
Yeah…  I can do that
And then, after you’ve recovered…
Quietly seek the green snake woman in her lair, at noon, as she sleeps
And kiss her on the forehead, ever so gently…
And she’ll be yours, forever
Wow!  I can do that too!
But this… all this…     can never be
What?  But, Doc!  What are you saying?  I can do that stuff
Why?  Doesn’t it work?
Oh, yes!  But… well… the decoction?
Yeah?
‘Made a batch last night…
You…?
‘Drank it this morning
You…!
‘Kissed her at noon
No!  You mean to tell me…?
Yes.  I mean to say…

I got the green snake woman with the strawberry hair
She’s the green snake woman for me
I got the green snake woman with the strawberry hair
She’s the green snake woman for me
My friends all gag, but I don’t care
She’s as cute as can be
I got the green snake woman with the strawberry hair
She’s the green snake woman for me
And they say that she’s not natural, but
She’s the woman for me
She’s the green snake woman with the strawberry hair
She’s the woman for me
She’s the woman for me
She’s the woman for me
Yeah!

My Eyes Of Blue
Copyright 2012, by Alan Kim Cochran

And you can’t know, and you can’t feel
The pain in me, I’m calling for you
If you could see, the things I see
Forever through, my eyes of blue

And you know, we’ve waited so long
And you know, the right from the wrong

And you can’t know, and you can’t feel
The pain in me, I’m calling for you
If you could see, the things I see
Forever through, my eyes of blue

And I tried to give you my heart
And I was true, right from the start

And you can’t know, and you can’t feel
The pain in me, I’m calling for you
If you could see, the things I see
Forever through, my eyes of blue

I reach for you; you throw me away
And I will fight on, another day

And you can’t know, and you can’t feel
The pain in me, I’m calling for you
If you could see, the things I see
Forever through, my eyes of blue

If you could see
The things I see
Forever through, my eyes of blue

YOU’RE SO EASY
Copyright 2012, by Alan Kim Cochran

And you’re so easy
And you’re so easy

When I first met you girl, standing alone
When I first met you girl, you pushed me away
You were so hard to me
So hard on me

And you’re so easy
And you’re so easy

When I first met you girl, standing alone
I got to know you girl, you asked me to stay
You were so soft, to me
So soft, with me

And you’re so easy
And you’re so easy

But now that you’re mine
I’m yours, anytime

And you’re so easy
And you’re so easy

Now that I have you girl, never alone
Now that I have you girl, you want me to stay
You are so “there”, for me
So there, for me

And you’re so easy
And you’re so easy
And you’re so easy
And you’re so easy

Only for me…
And you’re…
Only for me…
And you’re…
Only for me…
And you’re…
Only for me…

To The Wailing Wall Again
Copyright 2012, by Alan Kim Cochran

Stumble to the wall
Feel dead weight as you fall
You can hear that siren call
…again
As you, fall again
As you, crawl again
To the wailing wall again

You’ll have one more drink
It’s more than you think
Oh, the spirits you sink
As you, fall again
As you, crawl again
As you, once again
To the wailing wall again

“See me, taste me, feel me again
See me, taste me, feel me again
Know that I’ll always be a friend”
‘Find yourself all alone once again
‘Find yourself all alone once again

Stumble to the wall
Feel dead weight as you fall
You can hear that siren call
…again
As you, fall again
As you, crawl again
To the wailing wall again

“See me, taste me, feel me again
See me, taste me, feel me again
Know that I’ll always be a friend”
‘Find yourself all alone once again
‘Find yourself all alone once again
And you are all alone once again

SLEEP BY MY SIDE, AND DREAM
Copyright 2012, by Alan Kim Cochran

Another time, another day
You can trust me all the way
Another day, another night
And I’ll tell you it’s alright

Close your eyes and dream
Things are not as they seem
Sleep by my side and dream

Another time, another day
Feel your body slip away
Drift in ether, through the dark
Life is just a distant spark

Close your eyes and dream
Things are not as they seem
Sleep by my side and dream

Another time, another day
I’ll make sure that you will stay
Sleep forever, here with me
Tragic love, eternally

Close your eyes and dream
Things are not as they seem
Sleep by my side and dream
Close your eyes and dream
Things are not as they seem
Sleep by my side and dream
Here at my side and dream
Stay by my side and dream

Another time, another day
You can trust me all the way
Another day, another night
And I’ll tell you it’s alright
